You can open Markdown files in several ways:
- Right-click on any .md file and select "Open With" → "MD Viewer"
- Drag and drop a .md file onto the MD Viewer app icon
- Use File menu inside MD Viewer: File → Open (⌘O)
- Set as default: Right-click a .md file → Get Info → Open with: MD Viewer → Change All
MD Viewer is designed as a viewer only - it does not include editing capabilities. This keeps the app lightweight, fast, and focused on beautiful rendering.
For editing, we recommend using your favorite text editor (like VS Code, Sublime Text, or even TextEdit) and then viewing the results in MD Viewer.
Exporting to PDF is simple:
- Open your Markdown file in MD Viewer
- Go to File → Export as PDF (or press ⌘P)
- Choose your destination and filename
- Click Save

Troubleshooting
App won't open / crashes on launch
Try these steps:
- Quit MD Viewer completely (⌘Q)
- Open Activity Monitor and ensure no MD Viewer processes are running
- Restart MD Viewer
- If the issue persists, try restarting your Mac
- As a last resort, delete the app and re-download from the Mac App Store
Files not rendering correctly
If your Markdown isn't displaying as expected:
- Ensure the file has a
.mdor.markdownextension - Check that the file encoding is UTF-8
- Try opening the file in a text editor to verify it contains valid Markdown
- Some advanced Markdown extensions (like footnotes or custom HTML) may not be supported
Images not showing
If images aren't displaying:
- Check that image paths are correct (relative to the .md file location)
- Ensure image files exist at the specified paths
- Supported formats: PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP, SVG
- Online images require an internet connection
PDF export issues
If PDF export isn't working:
- Ensure you have write permissions for the destination folder
- Check that your disk has sufficient space
- Try exporting to a different location (like Desktop)
- Large documents may take a few moments to export
